History

FM symptoms have been known for hundreds of years though it was only in 1981 that Professor Yunus formulated a diagnostic term.

This lead to the development of the official American College of Rheumatology Criteria in 1990 which is now used worldwide.

Previous names and descriptions have included lumbago and fibrositis.
