IBS

See Irritable Bowel syndrome.

Inflammation

A reaction to infection, irritation or other injury and indicated by redness, warmth, swelling and pain.

Irritable bowel syndrome

One of the most common intestinal ailments. Also known as spastic colon, spastic colitis, mucous colitis.

ME

See Myalgic Encephalitis.

Metabolic rate

The speed at which food is broken down into energy.

Myalgic Encephalitis

This term indicates inflammation in the brain and the spinal cord. A better term for this condition is CFS or CFIDS.

Neuro-endocrinology

The study of the interactions among the nervous system and the endocrine system.

Neuropeptides

Molecules found in the brain, often in axon terminals at synapses, and built from amino acids. The include endorphins, enkephalins and vasopressin.

Norepinephirine

Regulates production of substance P.

Osteoarthritis

Caused by wear and tear of the cartilage.

Pain

An unpleasant sensation that has both physical and emotional components. Physical pain is caused by nerve stimulation which is picked up and transported by nerve fibres to the brain.

Parasthesia

Abnormal sensation of the skin - numbness, tingling, prickling, burning, creeping - with no objective cause.
