Restless leg syndrome

Uncomfortable sensation – creeping, tingling, throbbing, twitching or aching – experienced in the calves while sitting or lying down. It causes an uncontrolable need for relief by moving the legs. It can cause insomnia.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Chronic inflammation of the joints, tissues surrounding the joints and other organs.

Serotonin

A hormone in the brain and other areas of the body. Changes of levels in the brain alter a person’s mood. Regulates production of substance P.

Also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine or 5HT.

SSRIs

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. A form of medication that affects the neurotransmitters by increasing the effectiveness of serotonin.

Stress

Powerful neurochemicals and hormones prepare the body for action when the brain thinks the body is in danger – flight or fight response. If no action is taken, health problems can result over a period unbroken stresses.

Stress is best managed by exercise, medication, relaxation and learning new coping strategies.

Substance P

High levels of substance P in spinal fluid cause neurons to send pain messages to the brain without any injury. Production is regulated by norepinepherine, serotonin and dopamine all of which are low in FMs.

Thyroid gland

A gland in the throat that affects heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and metabolic rate.

Trauma

A serious or critical bodily injury wound or shock which can be either physical or emotional.
