Acupuncture

Holistic, complementary therapy which uses needles and sometimes heat to unblock energy flow around the body.

Aerobic exercise

Brisk physical activity which makes the heart and lungs work harder to improve oxygen circulation around the body. Activities include swimming, cycling, walking.

Allodynia

Pain from a cause that is not normally painful, eg, brushing past a plant.

Amino acids

The building blocks from which protein is made, eg. muscle tissue, hair, nails

Anaemia

A reduced quantity of haemoglobin in the red blood cells which means less oxygen can be absorbed into the blood which causes feelings of tiredness or fatigue in the body.

Analgesia

Inability to feel pain while still conscious. Term given to painkillers.

Anxiety

Feeling of apprehension and fear. Characterised by physical symptoms including feelings of stress, palpitations, sweating.

Aromatherapy

Holistic, complimentary therapy which uses concentrated essential oils prepared from plants and flowers. The smell stimulates the brain or is absorbed into the blood stream to promote healing.
